Characteristic Compound Colours
- Transition metals form compounds with distinctive colours, unlike Group 1 compounds which are typically white solids that form colourless solutions
- Copper(II) compounds form blue solutions and solids.
High Melting and Boiling Points
- Ionic compounds formed by transition metals have strong ionic bonding throughout giant crystal lattices, resulting in extremely high melting points
- Nickel(II) oxide (NiO) melts at 1955°C.
High Density Solids
- Solid transition metal compounds exist as dense ionic solids, contrasting with the lower-density compounds formed by alkali metals
- Copper(II) oxide (CuO) has a high density of 6.31 g/cm3
Catalytic Activity of Compounds
