Testing for Carbonate Ions
- Adding dilute hydrochloric acid to a sample containing carbonate ions produces a salt, carbon dioxide gas, and water.
- The carbon dioxide gas produced is bubbled through limewater, which turns cloudy — this is a positive result confirming the presence of carbonate ions.
