What Is a Carbon Footprint?
- A carbon footprint is the total amount of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases emitted over the entire life cycle of a product, service, or event.
- Understanding carbon footprints helps us identify the most environmentally damaging activities and decide whether they are worth their environmental cost.
Why Carbon Footprints Are Hard to Measure
- Measuring a carbon footprint requires accounting for every stage of a product's life, including raw material sourcing, manufacturing, energy use, transport, and disposal.
- Even for a relatively simple product like a mobile phone, many emission sources โ such as transporting components around the world โ can easily be overlooked.
- In reality, a perfectly accurate carbon footprint calculation is often impossible, though rough estimates are still useful for comparing the environmental impact of different activities.
Reducing Emissions: Renewable Energy
- Switching from fossil fuels to renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, or nuclear energy is one key way to reduce carbon emissions.
- Renewable energy is often more expensive than fossil fuels, which makes widespread adoption economically challenging.
Reducing Emissions: Efficient Manufacturing & Waste
- Using more efficient manufacturing processes reduces the amount of energy consumed and the quantity of waste produced.
- Reducing waste is particularly important because decomposers breaking down waste can release methane, a potent greenhouse gas.
Carbon Capture Technology
- Carbon capture technology captures carbon dioxide produced when fossil fuels are burned before it can escape into the atmosphere.
- The captured carbon dioxide can be stored deep underground in geological formations such as old oil wells, preventing it from contributing to climate change.
The Role of Governments
- Governments can help reduce emissions by introducing new environmental laws or taxing companies based on the volume of greenhouse gases they emit.
- Governments often hesitate to prioritise environmental policies if they fear it could damage their national economy.
- International agreements on emissions are difficult to reach because no country wants to commit unless it is confident all other nations will do the same.
Individual Responsibility
- Every individual has a responsibility to be aware of their own consumption and make lifestyle changes to help reduce overall greenhouse gas emissions.
- Collective action from both governments and individuals is essential if the worst effects of climate change are to be avoided.
