Testing for Oxygen

  • A glowing splint (one that is glowing red but has no flame) is used to test for oxygen.
  • If oxygen is present in the test tube, the glowing splint will relight when inserted into the gas sample.
  • The splint relights because combustion requires oxygen, so a large supply of oxygen reignites the reaction.
